Garage Doors and Openers Safety

Garage doors are the largest moving object in the house operated mostly by automatic openers. Properly and safely working garage doors needs to be installed, maintained and tested correctly. Improperly or unadjusted garage door or opener can cause a grave damage: one can get hit by the closing door or being trapped under it. In the latter case, the injury could be lethal.

To avoid these incidents, you must make a habit of examining your garage door mechanism regularly to create a safer environment in your home.

CHILDREN'S SAFETY IS ABOVE ALL! You should explain to the children that garage doors are NOT TOYS! Playing with garage doors, openers or controls can lead to tragic results. It is your responsibility to explain all the safety risks of being hit by or caught under the door as well as playing under or near the open garage door. It is also your responsibility to teach the kids to keep their fingers and hands away from section joints, hinges, tracks, springs and other door parts at all times!

To prevent any potential harm when closing the door, it must be in your sight at all times until it stops moving. In case of any problems with the mechanism or hardware, you should immediately repair it.

Study you garage door and opener manual and learn how to operate it. Read carefully the following safety and maintenance precautions that will help you to prevent the potential damage. 

 The pushbutton control should be placed HIGH on the wall (at least 5 feet from the floor) out of children's reach and away from the moving parts. Moreover, the pushbutton should be placed and used where you can see the garage door move.

 DO NOT stand or walk under the moving garage door!

DO NOT let anyone to play with the door or to hit it! It can result in a serious injury or even death. Learn how to use the emergency release if someone is pinned behind the garage door.

DO NOT let the children play with the garage door or with its remote control. Keep the garage door remote control out of children's reach at all times!
